Atomics

Step into a specialized submarine and shrink to the atomic level! Your task is to save a wastewater treatment plant from a catastrophe. The more efficient you are at gathering nutrients, the more points you get! Face and nurture the wacky microbes of the aeration tank! Find the treasured golden dentures and many other valuable items in the screening tank! Your contribution to the fight against waste by collecting nutrients will help build a better society.

Project

This project is part of Opi ravinteista! (Learn about nutrients! in English) project to produce material related to nutrient recycling and nutrient awareness. Learn about nutrients! project is part of the The Programme II (Raki2) in which TAMK participates. During the academic year 2019-2020, the Bachelor of Business Administration, Business Information Systems degree programme created mobile games that were thematic to the project.

The birth of the game came from our team's idea that we wanted to create a game that works entirely in one mode, meaning we didn't want separate levels in the game. When we came up with that, we set out to explore different games to get inspiration. During the game research, the old space shooting classic Asteroids stood out. That game resonated quickly with our team, and based on that, we started thinking about how to add the core idea and mechanics of that game to our game that would still need to be in line with our project theme.

The result of the design and project meetings was that we set out to implement a game set up at a wastewater treatment plant. In the game's wastewater treatment plant, the player can perform various tasks of the wastewater treatment plant in three rooms that represent the correct stages of a real life wastewater treatment process: bar screen filtering, pre-clarification and aeration. Also, the original idea of one continous mode for the progress of the game was included in the game: the stages of each room are running at the same time and the player moves between them to handle the different processes.

Our team composition has lived during the project. At one point, our team shrank from a five-member team to a three-person team but we worked hard on the game and the game was completed on time. The project has taught us a lot about project and team work, programming and communicating with the client. It’s a great opportunity to get to implement your own game in a real customer project and also publish the game for everyone to play! In addition to this, the theme of the game is really important and we hope that people will learn more about nutrient recycling as well as the importance of nutrients through the games created through the project.
